The number of people residing in cities continues to grow at an unprecedented rate. This rapid urbanisation is causing pollution exposure levels to exceed recommended limits. How can we address this challenge? The first step is to truly understand its impact. Dynamic data sources, such as mobile network data, enable us to accurately measure how this pollution affects the population, empowering us to design effective public policies for healthier, more sustainable cities.

One of the aspects addressed by the new Spanish Sustainable Mobility Law is the role of data in the mobility ecosystem, introducing three key points regarding the management of mobility data: the Integrated Mobility Data Space (EDIM) as a common tool, the regulation of data-sharing mechanisms in the sector, and the generation of new use cases for mobility data linked to the development of evidence-based public transport policies. In this article, we provide a brief overview of these three instruments.

France has received the go-ahead from the European Commission to ban short-haul flights in trips for which there is a good rail alternative. In this article we review the fine print of the French law, identify which connections in Spain meet the criteria — or will do so with the planned infrastructures —, and analyse the effects that this may have for the passengers of some of the connections that are could be affected by this measure in Spain.
