COAM hosts a new edition of Nommon Innovation Days about big data, artificial intelligence and transport
  • On Friday, 13 June, Nommon held its annual event, Nommon Innovation Days: leveraging big data and artificial intelligence for transport planning and management.
  • One of the highlights of this year’s edition was the company’s evolution towards a Software as a Service (SaaS) model for its solutions.

On Friday, 13 June, Nommon returned to the Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos de Madrid (COAM) gathering more than 150 transport professionals to explore the multiple applications of big data and AI in transport planning and operations.

The event’s agenda focused on the optimisation of mobility by leveraging technology and data for informed decision-making. After an introductory talk by Ricardo Herranz, CEO of Nommon, Luisa Chaves, Nommon’s Business Development Director, presented the company’s product suite. Her presentation laid out the guiding themes of the day, linking various use cases of Nommon’s solutions to specific end-user profiles.

Monitoring and diagnosing mobility using big data sources

Bruna Calazans, Mobility Analytics Director at Nommon, introduced the company’s descriptive analytics solutions: Mobility Insights, Population Insights, and Transit Insights, providing an overview of the data processing pipeline used by these solutions and highlighting several recent projects, such as the Multi-MNO project developed for Eurostat.

Afterwards, Tania Gullón, Head of the Transport Studies and Technology Division at the Spanish Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, shared one of the best known use cases of big data in mobility planning: the Study of national passenger mobility using big data. Since 2022, Nommon has been developing this project for the Spanish Ministry of Transport in collaboration with Orange Spain The project has adopted an open data approach with the aim of enhancing transparency, efficiency, citizen engagement, and economic development.

Alberto Romero, Mobility Advisor at the Málaga City Council, presented how Nommon’s mobility matrices have been used to update the city’s mobility assessment. The matrices provided by Nommon were segmented by transport mode by fusing mobile network data, mobility surveys, and data from Málaga’s public transport smart card system.

To close this first block of presentations, Miguel Picornell, Product Manager for Mobility Insights and Population Insights, unveiled the new Mobility Insights interface, designed to enhance user experience and incorporate powerful new features — including interactive visualisation tools and generative AI for detecting and analysing key events and anomalies in mobility patterns.

Artificial intelligence for transport planning and operations

The next session of the day explored Nommon’s predictive and prescriptive analytics solutions, specifically WiseRide and WiseTransit.

Inés Peirats, Programme Manager in Nommon’s Transport Systems division, opened the session by introducing the newest features of WiseRide, Nommon’s platform for optimising shared mobility services. She showcased its use in public bike-sharing programmes in cities such as Zaragoza and Valladolid. Using machine learning, WiseRide forecasts demand at each station for the coming hours and generates bike redistribution strategies to maximise demand capture and minimise operational costs.

Rubén Artime, Transport Systems Director, outlined the department’s journey from its creation  to 2025, which has led to the integration of Transit Insights and WiseTransit into Nommon’s SaaS platform. He also shared how these tools can help public transport authorities and operators address key planning and operational questions.

The session concluded with a presentation by Jorge Vicente Rojo, Director of TicMoveo, who discussed the digital twin of León’s transport system, developed by Nommon for the Regional Government of Castilla y León in collaboration with CTyM and Ambar Telecomunicaciones. This digital twin — which integrates several of Nommon’s tools (Mobility Insights, Transit Insights, and WiseTransit) alongside a strategic transport model developed with PTV Visum — provides a comprehensive, continuously updated picture of regional mobility and supports transport planning and operations.

Big data and artificial intelligence for the future of mobility

Raquel Sánchez, Director of Nommon Lab, underlined the importance of innovation to the company and presented its R&D&I roadmap. She highlighted current initiatives such as the development of an air quality simulation platform, a tool for optimising the location of electric vehicle charging points, and a road safety analysis platform based on emerging big data sources like connected vehicle data.

Next, Miguel Baena, Product Manager in Nommon’s Aviation division, addressed the role of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in sustainable mobility. He outlined Nommon’s contribution to decision support tools in various areas of Innovative Air Mobility, from regional drone-based transport services to U-Space services and optimal vertiport placement.

Embracing uncertainty to build a more resilient and sustainable transport system

The event finished with a keynote by Luis (Pilo) Willumsen, Managing Partner at Nommon, who encouraged participants to reflect on the uncertainty of today’s landscape and its implications for transport planning. Subsequently, he moderated a roundtable discussion with three leading industry experts: Ulises Wensell, Demand and Revenue Studies Manager for infrastructure concessions at Acciona; Amparo Moyano Enríquez de Salamanca, Associate Professor of Urban Planning at the University of Castilla-La Mancha; and Francisco Burgos, Strategic Business & Innovation Development Manager at IDOM. They discussed future challenges and the opportunities emerging from the latest generative AI tools.

Nommon Innovation Days: a key gathering for the transport sector

This edition continues the Nommon Innovation Days series, first launched in 2016. Since then, the event has established itself as a key meeting point for the transport sector in Spain, demonstrating Nommon’s leadership in pioneering technologies for transport planning and operations — both in Europe and Latin America.
